Congenital (inborn) ear malformations or deformities result from errors in the embryologic development of the fetal auricular cartilage (outer ear cartilage) during the fifth to ninth weeks of gestation (the period between conception and birth).
Some ear anomalies, like deformities caused by the abnormal positioning of the child during gestation or birth, are temporary and may resolve on their own as the ear unfolds and achieves a more normal appearance.
However, some malformations can cause cosmetic and functional issues, and most may require nonsurgical or surgical intervention to correct. Dr. Tahiri is a world-class pediatric plastic surgeon who can assess, diagnose, and treat infants, children, and adolescents with various ear anomalies.
